How to Choose a Good Domain Name?
Your domain name is your identity on the Internet. Your visitors will be able to access your site by registering it in the navigation bar of their web browser. A domain name consists of a series of alphanumeric characters and an extension (also called TLD, acronym for "Top Level Domain").
Here are some examples of domain names:
- votresiteweb.com
- macompagnie.tn
- mesloisirs.net
You are free to choose the domain name that suits you best, as long as it has not already been reserved by someone else.
Here are some tips to help you choose a good domain name:
- Choose a domain name that is short and easy to remember.
- Use a domain name that reflects the content of your website.
- If it is a corporate site, use the name of the company, if possible.
- Use keywords in your domain name to improve your presence in search engines.
- It is possible to register multiple domain names that point to the same site, each with its own purpose (example: the first domain uses the name of your company, and the second domain uses the keywords of your service).
As for the extension of the domain name, several choices are available to you (partial list):
- .com: available to the general public, most popular extension on the Internet. If available, this extension should probably be your first choice. Unfortunately, most shorter .com domains are already registered, so you have to be creative to find a good one!
- .tn: more rigorous registration criteria; this extension is reserved for Tunisian or Tunisian companies and is strongly recommended if you target a Tunisian market.
- .net: available to the general public, initially used for computer companies. Nowadays this extension is used everywhere. Good alternative if the .com is already taken.
- .org: available to the general public, originally used for groups or organizations, but now this extension is used everywhere. Ideal for non-profit organizations.
- .co: new type of domain launched in 2010, .co are widely available and offer a great alternative to .com
- .biz: available to the general public, used mainly by businesses and businesses.
- .info: available to the general public, generally used for informative sites.
- .me: new extension available in 2008, for personal sites.
