A virtual dedicated server (also called virtual server), in English virtual private server (VPS) or virtual dedicated server (VDS) is a method of partitioning a server into several independent virtual servers which each have the characteristics of a dedicated server , using virtualization techniques. Each server can run on a different operating system and reboot independently. In the field of web hosting, several denominations cover the same type of offers and therefore services. The acronyms VPS (Virtual Private Server) and VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server) refer to the same concept, and their usage is sometimes confusing.
A virtual server is a logical subpart of a hosting server. The resources are therefore shared between different logical partitions which are independent of each other, and which behave as a unit like a standard dedicated server with a few reservations, in particular at the level of the kernel, the file system or the network interfaces.
Solutions based on isolation are often called virtual private servers, the term virtual dedicated server being attributed to solutions based on para-virtualization, but commercial names often mix or amalgamate. A physical server can be seen as a book. This book is composed of independent white pages all numbered 1. Depending on the space needed for a virtual server, it will occupy more or less pages. But the fact that these are independent allows the various virtual servers located inside the machine to be in no way linked. A failure occurring on one server will therefore in no way affect another. We also note that following the use of virtual servers, the physical server changes its main function since its sole purpose becomes to manage and ensure the proper functioning of the virtual servers. In fact, in the event of a breakdown, this main server informs the user in advance, allowing the latter to change the part even before it has been defective.
The main reasons for partitioning a physical machine into several virtual dedicated servers are to improve security: if one of the applications, for example the web server, is corrupted or causes problems, the other applications located in different virtual dedicated servers will continue to operate normally. This also makes it possible to reduce the cost price and the number of physical servers required: it is also possible to group together several virtual servers in the same physical server, while maintaining perfect isolation between the servers and therefore very good security, as well as configurations can be completely different. This therefore no longer requires a physical machine per server and reduces the price, consumption and occupation in the computer room.
