Why are my emails considered spam?
Many of you have encountered a spam problem and are wondering why your email was spammed.
Spamming can be defined as the misuse of an electronic messaging system intended to deliberately and usually repeatedly expose all or some of its users to irrelevant and unsolicited messages or content, often by to confuse them with the messages or content usually exchanged or sought by these users.
The repeated massive sending of unsolicited emails triggers spamming, especially when the destination email addresses have never been in contact with the recipients and these emails are of an advertising nature.
The e-mail address constitutes personal data within the meaning of these legislations. However, very often, this collection is done in a wild way by means of "vacuuming software" of addresses present on the mailing lists or discussion forums.
The practice of spamming therefore poses two problems with regard to the rules relating to the protection of personal data represented by e-mail addresses:
- that of the conditions of collection and use of this personal data for prospecting purposes, in particular when this collection takes place in public areas of the Internet,
- that of the assessment of the means implemented to allow the prospected persons to oppose it ("opt-in" and "opt-out"). So in order to pass the anti-spam filter, several elements must be privileged :
1. The sender name and the subject of your email,
2. The content of your email,
3. The unsubscribe link,
4. The code of your email (for the most technical),
5. Reputation of IP Address and Sending Domain.
To avoid being flagged as spam, you can follow some rules:
1. Always ask for the consent of your recipients before sending them an email and banish any notion of buying or renting email databases,
2. Keep your recipient lists healthy: Set up double opt-in, systematically, clean your recipient lists regularly and set up multiple mailing lists,
3. Manage your sending frequency with respect: Adapt the frequency of your sendings and enter the time between the moment you collect an email address and the moment you send your 1st emailing,
4. Highlight the unsubscribe link.
By following these instructions, you will decrease the chances of encountering the spamming problem and you can ensure your email communication is successful.
